Plural Noun

-names more than one person, place or thing.

 

CHANGING PLURAL NOUNS:

  • * Usually plural nouns have an “S” ending.

 EXCEPT WHEN...

  • a singular noun ends in SH, SH, CH or X, add es to make the plural form.

Examples:

 

Box=Boxes

Brush=Brushes

Dish=Dishes

Peach=Peaches

 

  • irregular nouns that don’t change when they are plural. You need to memorize them

  • -a singular noun ends in a consonant and y, change y to i and add es.

Examples:

Party   /   Parties,

Plural Nouns with a “s” ending

Usually plural nouns have an “S” ending, except for the words that end in s, x, ch, sh or y

 

Examples of Plural Nouns with an “s” ending

doll   /   dolls

house   /   houses

river   /   rivers

Plural Nouns with an “es” ending

a singular noun ends in SH, SH, CH or X, add es to make the plural form.

Examples:

dish     /   dishes

 

peach      /   peaches

class   /  classes

fox   / foxes

wish    / wishes

switch    / switches

witch     /  witches

Plural Nouns with “ies” ending

A noun ending in y preceded by a consonant makes the plural with -ies.

Examples:

Singular /  Plural

cry       /   cries

dry  /     dries

fly    /     flies

city     /   cities

lady    /  ladies

baby  /   babies

Some nouns have the same form in the singular and the plural.
