Prophet:
The dictionary definition of a prophet is different from the scriptures definition. According to Deuteronomy 18, a prophet MUST prophesy! If his/her prophesy does not come to pass, then he is a false prophet & YHWH did not speak to him.
Deuteronomy 18 also explains why we have prophets instead of YHWH speaking to us directly.
Deuteronomy18:15
YHWH thy Elohim will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
16 According to all that thou desiredst of YHWH thy Elohim in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of YHWH my Elohim, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
17 And YHWH said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
FALSE PROPHET:
False Prophet is a person (male or female) who falsely prophesies in the name of YHWH, making a false prediciton of the future & testifying falsely in YHWH’s name.
Deuteronomy 18:20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other elohim, even that prophet shall die.
21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which YHWH hath not spoken?
22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of YHWH, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which YHWH hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
YHWH’s prophets have to prophesy in order for us to know he was sent by YHWH. So a prophet receives a messages from YHWH & he makes predictions.
Who can be prophets?
Joel 2:28
And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
A female prophet is called a prophetess. See scriptures about prophetesses.
Prophesy is a prediction of the future.
There are many kinds of prophesies in the Scriptures.
A Blessing from YHWH is a prophesy that will happen if you obey his word.
ACurse from YHWH is a prophesy that will happen if you do not obey his word.
A Covenant from YHWHis a promise prophesy that will come to pass no matter what, because it is YHWH’s word or his vow. It is also a mutual agreement, if the one person breaks the covenant it is void, unless another covenant replaces it.
Distant Future Prophesies Many great distant future prophesies can be found in the book of Daniel, Revelation, & the Book of Enoch.
Daniel 2:27
Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king; 28But there is aElohim in heaven that revealeth secrets,and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;

How does Yahweh speak to his people?
Numbers 12:6
6And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I Yahweh will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.
Prophesies can come in a vision or in a dream or YHWH may speak the word to his prophetes directly like Moses.
Job 4:12
Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof. 13In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men, 14Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. 15Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up: 16It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying, …

Job 7:14
Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions:
Job 33:
14For Yahweh speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
15In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
16Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,
17That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
DANIEL WAS A PROPHET
Daniel 1:17
As for these four children, Yahweh gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
Daniel 4:5
I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.
Moses was a Prophet
“And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face” (Dt 34:10).
